Registeration

Registeration

Under the act, the council must keep a register in which all medical practitioners’ pharmacists and dentists are registered with their name’s qualifications and addresses. Registration in the medical register is mandatory for any practitioner to practice medicine in Sudan; Failure to do that is punishable as it contravenes the act. There are four types of registration, provisional registration; full registration; specialist registration; and temporary registration. The registers are published regularly.

  1. The provisional registration
  2. Is the register of new Sudanese medical graduates or foreign medical graduates from recognised medical schools. They are allowed to practice as interns in Sudan health service under the supervision of specialists so as to gain practical experience to be eligible for full registration.

  3. The full registration
  4. This is the register in which graduates of medical, dental and pharmacy schools who have successfully completed the internship and passed the licencing examinations are registered, they are then eligible to practice independently.

  5. The specialist registration
  6. Is the register of specialists and consultants eligible to work in the Sudan health service as such after satisfying the SMC requirements and regulations. A doctor can take up a substantive specialist or consultant post only when his or her details have been entered on the appropriate specialist register.

  7. The temporary registration
  8. Is the register of expatriate general practitioners, specialists and consultants, dentists, and pharmacists, eligible to work in the Sudan health service for a limited period of time. This type of register entitles the practitioner to practice medicine only in the institution he or she is assigned to.
